By the end of this video you will be able to size your solar panels, batteries, charge controllers and inverters. We will also share with you the solar sizing formula, used in this video. We shall also show you a real life example, on how to size your Solar power system. The reason why we are doing this video is that we found that there is no standard formula for sizing solar and our schools, they were not offering sufficient knowledge to electrical students about solar sizing, you can imagine, i studied a diploma in electrical engineering, but even at end of first year when i studied solar, i was still unable to size a solar system. But I had to go to school again, to study a mini-course about solar photovoltaic systems which was sponsored by the government of kenya, United States Agency for International Development and Japan International Cooperation Agency.
This is after the government realized there was a knowledge gap in the solar industry and consumers were not getting value for their money. It also released a legal framework on how to license and educate solar technicians and Solar shops’ owners. The course helped me with sufficient knowledge about solar sizing of which I shall share some with you here. The course has helped me in sizing all solar components, that is ,batteries, inverters and charge controllers. So Stick till the end and enjoy.
So if you are planning to install solar on your home, you just want it to work sufficiently without interruptions but most importantly , not to pay monthly electric bills. But you don't know where to get started, one, you can just call a solar technician and outsource that problem to them. But nowadays the current generation of consumers research a product before buying it to avoid complications that may arise, after a purchase is made. In the case of purchasing a solar power system you don't know whether the solar power system is calibrated according to your power needs or what installed is what you want. In this video we will equip you with sufficient knowledge, so that you can make an informed decision before purchasing a solar power system. Sometimes many problems that may occur on solar power systems mostly depend on the knowledge and skill level of the solar technician who installed it. But most problems like misquoting solar equipment, that results in not having enough power to the consumer, can be avoided during the planning stages. Also we as consumers buy off-shelf solar products before assessing our power needs , and whether that product will satisfy them and solve those problems.
Earlier in part one of this video we said the goal of this video is to help you build a power system or power station on our roof that will satisfy our power needs. Solar panels are a great way of generating electricity because they have a 25 years plus service life. So during the planning stages of solar installation we ought to be careful so as to reap the monetary benefit of our solar investment for 25 plus years.
With all that out of the way let's get to the real part of the video. Solar sizing formula.
But first these are the steps we will follow when sizing your solar power system. First Step is you need to list all your daily power consumption. After doing so you need to use your power consumption to size your battery and size it in a way it will satisfy your needs even when the sun doesn't shine. We call these days of no sunshine, autonomy days. After sizing the battery we will size our solar panel according to the amount of sun that shines in our area. For example, a solar system in Mandela which is very sunny will be very significantly different to one in Nairobi which is less sunny compared to Mandela.
